Haiti

The Haitian republic, the second-oldest in the Western Hemisphere, stands on the brink of collapse. Since a 2010 earthquake near Port-au-Prince, Haiti has suffered a barrage of natural disasters and public health crises. Its criminal organizations have capitalized on the chaos, wresting control of most of Haiti from civil sector institutions, resulting in widespread kidnappings, extortion, sexual crimes, drug trafficking and theft of humanitarian aid, fuel, water and electricity. Haiti’s growing security vacuum culminated in the 2021 assassination of its president, the last of its elected government officials.
